A Pennsylvania teenager, in a David and Goliath like fashion, has sued Big Food for his diabetes and fatty liver disease claimed to be a result of consuming highly addictive ultra processed foods (UPF's). The claim is that UPF's contain addictive substances and are aggressively marketed to children and minorities. Big Food maintains that they comply with all FDA guidelines and that everything is above board.
In the 1980's, cigarette giants Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, acquired Kraft, General Foods and Nabisco, thereby securing control over a major portion of Big Food. It is claimed that they have now taken a page out of their cigarette playbook, by adding highly addictive substances to UPF's compelling overeating. This claim seeks to remove the defense that people choose to overeat and therefore become unhealthy of their own volition.
If this suit succeeds in holding Big Food accountable, it will be a significant step toward making America healthy again (MAHA). Increasing good health by reducing our consumption of UPF's, which makes up over 70% of our food supply, is at the heart of RFK, Jr.'s non-political MAHA mission as potential head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Perhaps it is finally time to rein in corporate greed in earnest and make our good health paramount.
