The implementation of the "Obamacare" laws in our country, has resulted in a spotlight being cast upon America's healthcare crisis. While it is not the intent of this blog to debate the pros and cons of "Obamacare", it appears that the causes of our healthcare crisis are varied and many. Some profess that the issues surrounding healthcare are merely symptoms, but not the disease. If that is the case, then what is the disease?
Perhaps the disease is the American diet. In general, the average American diet includes a steady appetite for fast and other unhealthy foods, which lead to a multitude of health problems and necessary health care. But the consumers are not necessarily the only ones to blame for their insatiable appetite for salty and unhealthy foods. Part of the problem is that restuarants and food stores alike, under the "watchful eye" of the government, will sell consumers almost anything in order to maximize a profit.
For example, one American fast food favorites is Jack in the Box. Among the late night menu selections is the Stacked Grilled Cheeseburger Munchie Meal. This meal consists of a cheeseburger topped with a sourdough grilled cheese sandwich, 2 tacos, fries (half curly and half regular) and a 20 ounce soda. The nutrition label for this meal reveals that the meal contains 1,679 calories (871 from fat), 97 grams of fat, 28 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams of trans fat, 129 mg of cholestoral, 144 g of carbohydrates and an astounding 3,538 mg of sodium. You don't have to be a health expert to know that food bearing this type of nutrition label, could be very problematic to your health.
The time has come for Americans to "step away from the cheeseburger" and make more responsible food choices. Many of us take great care of our cars and in choosing what type of oil or gas to put in them, yet all too often pay far less care and attention to what food we put in our bodies. Eating healthy today with the current state of our food supply, is challenging to say the least. It requires a major investment of our time and dedication in order to make wise food choices. However, the result of that investment could pay dividends toward a long, healthy and happy life. The choice is ours to make.
