The presidential election is now over and the transition of power is complete. Notwithstanding, our country remains essentially divided in half with 75 million plus Trump supporters refusing to agree with or accept the results. This begs the question, could all of this been avoided? Many believe the answer is yes and that the reason for our division is largely due to a supreme failure.
The 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore was highly contested in the state of Florida. In fact the election was so close that the result in Florida would, and in fact did, determine who would be the next president. As a result of the enormity of importance of such a presidential contest and in order to maintain integrity, the U.S. Supreme Court accepted that case, heard arguments and rendered a final and penultimate decision. Although there were many people who did not agree with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision, they accepted it in that it came from the highest court in the land.
In 2020, our country once again was faced with a highly contested and close presidential election. Only this time, the U.S. Supreme court failed to accept hearing arguments in any case in order to resolve the conflict. This supreme failure by the U.S. Supreme Court, has in no small part resulted in the division we face today in our country. If the U.S. Supreme court had fulfilled its sworn duty and heard arguments in the relevant matters as it did in 2000, then at least those on the losing side would have exhausted all possible remedies and received a penultimate decision. The losing side of the court's decision may still have not agreed with the decision, but would have more than likely at least accepted it having come from the absolute highest authority in the land.
Unfortunately, the U. S. Supreme Court's supreme failure to even hear arguments in a presidential contest for the second time in 20 years has in large part resulted in our country never being more divided since the Civil War. There is an undeniable peace of mind that is obtained with the knowledge of having exhausted all possibilities in resolving any conflict, which allows both the winning and losing sides to carry on. The current lack of peace of mind in the results of the 2020 election, has instead resulted in our country's first "Uncivil War." We are better than this.
