There is an drug overdose epidemic in our country that does not get the media attention it deserves. The CDC has now reported that in 2021 an estimated 107,000 Americans have died due to drug overdoses resulting from illegal drugs in our country. Approximately 71,000 of those deaths are associated with illegal fentanyl, which has now become the number one cause of death in adults 18 to 45 years old. In 2022, 379 million deadly doses of fentanyl have been seized. The large majority of this illegal fentanyl is being imported from China and smuggled into our country across our open southern border.
While our politicians continue to fail to address this epidemic and leave Washington D.C. for an extended holiday at home, 107,000 families and more are in perpetual morning over the potentially avoidable loss of a loved one. While politicians indulge themselves in food and drink, 107,000 families have lost their appetite in the face of an empty chair at the table and a vacant bed in their home. While politicians tear open expensive gifts with smiles on their faces, 107,000 families are wishing for a gift of life for their loved one that they will never get back. While politicians are visiting the homes of family and friends, 107,000 families are visiting the cemetery. While politicians are turning on their decorative holiday lights, 107,000 memorial candles are being lit in places of worship across the country.
As we each prepare to celebrate this holiday season, let us remember to pause and give thanks to God for all that we have in life. Say a prayer for those 107,000 families that are suffering the loss of a loved one this year due to overdose. Say a prayer for our politicians who turn a blind eye, so that they may finally open their eyes and take action to stop this horrible epidemic. Enjoy this holiday with your loved ones and pray that in 2023, God will bless all of us with peace, love, health and happiness.
