We are all aware in the current COVID crisis of numerous workers that have been deemed essential. Some are obvious such as doctors, police, nurses and pharmacists, while others are questionable such as marijuana dispensaries and liquor stores. Fortunately, conditions have significantly improved in recent weeks such that numerous states have started the process of re-opening many non-essential businesses in our quest to return to some form of normality.
Prudence dictates that during a world pandemic, our lawmakers or legislators are crucial to maintain law and order and to timely pass all laws necessary to navigate the turbulent waters. Accordingly, it would seem reasonable to conclude that U.S. legislators are essential workers. Unfortunately the United States Congress, comprised of the Senate and the House, apparently do not agree as they have been "out of session" for well over one month. The Senate reportedly is now actually starting to resume conducting business, while the House refuses to do so with its members staying at home for the forseeable future.
It is difficult to fathom how members of the U.S. Congress have stayed home all this time, while countless workers across the nation were compelled to report to work. It is perhaps even more egregious that currently as non-essential workers across the country are once again reporting to work, that the United State House of Representatives remains closed for business. Some House members have tried to assure Americans that although they are not in session, they are constantly on the telephone and working "even harder" from the comfort of their own homes.
It appears that members of the House of Representatives underestimate the intelligence of the American people who are financially stressed, unemployed and tired of political gamesmanship resulting in totalitarian state issued Executive Orders in place of democratic legislation. Politicians are not elected and well paid without salary interruption to stay at home while the people stay at and return to work. November is coming!
