Many of us remember President Obama's 2007 campaign promise to the American people pledging to label GMO foods. He had then seemingly acknowledged the potential dangers of GMO foods and affirmed that the American people had the right to know what is in the food they eat. Soon after he took office, he broke that campaign promise betraying the health of the American people and becoming very friendly with Monsanto.
Across the ocean President Putin has demonstrated at least one redeeming quality, by taking a very different approach to safeguarding the food the Russian people consume. Putin has effectively implemented a plan rejecting GMO foods in his country and replacing them with healthier organic foods. When discussing this plan and the changes made over the past ten years Putin said, “Ten years ago, we imported almost half of the food from abroad, and were dependent on imports. Now Russia is among the exporters. Last year, Russian exports of agricultural products amounted to almost $20 billion — a quarter more than the revenue from the sale of arms, or one-third the revenue coming from gas exports.”
Putin's goal is to become food self-sufficient by the year 2020. Russian disdain for GMO foods was expressed by Prime Minister Medvedev who stated, “If the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don’t need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic food." Putting aside our American born bias, it appears that Russian intelligence extends well beyond their military and is now found within their food supply choices.
Today with reportedly 64 countries around the world that either prohibit GMO foods or require GMO labels and Russia close to becoming a food self-sufficient GMO free country, one can't help but wonder who really runs this great country of ours. The answer no longer appears to be the person in the White House, but instead the Biotech Industry with its accomplice Big Pharma. Seemingly, one gets rich by making us sick while the other gets rich by medicating us just enough to prolong our demise.
Statistical surveys show that 90% of all Americans support GMO labels and the right to know what is in the food we eat. Perhaps our next President will respect and enforce the American people's food choices and refrain from making "Promises in the Dark."
