The Monsanto Co. sued rival DuPont for an alleged patent infringement of their Roundup Ready herbicide resistant technology for soybeans and corn. In short, the technology has to do with genetically modified seeds to produce super resistant crops. Genetic modification is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome, by introducing foreign DNA or synthetic genes into an organism. The use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's), is touted by biotech companies to be a technological salvation. However, there is a large and growing world wide movement that maintains in essence, that this technology will result in the demise of human health and will cause an ecological apocalypse.

Anti-GMO Demonstration
Monsanto sued DuPont in May 2009, seeking to prevent the alleged unlicensed combination of Monsanto's proprietary herbicide resistant soybeans and corn seeds with a DuPont product. DuPont maintained that Monsanto's patent was invalid and unenforceable and that DuPont never sold any of the seeds at issue. On August 1, 2012, the jury came back with a verdict in favor of Monsanto and awarding One Billion Dollars in damages.
Movment For GMO Labels
If the verdict is not modified by the District Court, it will make this case a candidate for close scrutiny by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. DuPont currently has an antitrust and patent misuse case against Monsanto, anticipated to go before a different jury in approximately one year. Notwithstanding the growing evidence of the alleged ills and harmful effects of GMO's, currently there is no legal requirement to label foods apprising consumers of which foods contain GMO's.
