Currently in New York State, there is a debate as to whether or not illegal immigrants should be allowed to have driving privileges. As of May 2017, there are twelve states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico that have laws allowing illegal immigrants to obtain either a driver's license or some type of a driving permit. These states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Vermont and Washington. According to numerous surveys, there is between approximately eleven million and twenty million illegal immigrants in our country, which translates to potentially millions of illegal immigrant drivers on our roads.
Traffic safety organizations estimate there is on average between 30,000 and 40,000 road deaths per year in our country. It is estimated that 20 percent of those road deaths or approximately 7,500 deaths per year, are caused by unlicensed drivers. That translates to potentially upwards of 20 Americans per day killed by unlicensed drivers. This begs the question as to how many of those deaths were caused by illegal immigrant drivers. Some estimates claim the answer to that question is approximately half. Notwithstanding, the fact of the matter is that we don't know exactly how many road deaths per year are caused by illegal immigrants. The reason we don't have exact numbers is because State and Federal Highway Safety Officials, do not include immigrant status when reporting these type of deaths.
Advocates of granting licenses to illegal immigrants, argue that by doing so illegal immigrants are required to pass written and road tests making them safer drivers and thereby making our roads safer. Opponents argue that the right to drive is a privilege and that illegal immigrants have no right to such a privilege. Further, that if we had among other things, better border security and enforcement of our deportation laws, these illegal immigrants would not be in our country in the first place helping negate the problem.
Whichever side of the argument one agrees with, the fact remains that road deaths caused by illegal immigrants is yet another serious problem that our politicians have failed to address and rectify. This is not a Blue or Red problem, but an American problem and our citizens deserve better from our politicians. Have your say this Election Day by exercising your right to vote!
