The U.S. Supreme Court will decide the fate of a California law that compels pregnancy care centers to essentially promote abortion. The law requires pregnancy care centers to post a conspicuous advisory bulletin, apprising all that enter of the option of state subsidized abortion. Failure to comply with the law results in a $500.00 to $1,000.00 fine per violation.
Proponents of the law state that it is merely an extension of the State's substantial interest in the health of its people and in keeping them fully informed. Opponents argue that the law violates First Amendment rights and forces centers to either provide free advertising for abortion or subsidize abortion by the payment of fines. Further, that the State of California not only prohibits a difference in beliefs or opinions, but penalizes those who are unwilling to capitulate their beliefs and adopt those of the State.
Perhaps this California law is reflective of the polarization that currently exists in our Divided States of America. We now live in an era that appears to be riddled with political agenda and corruption on both the State and Federal level. Democrats and Republicans not only no longer respect each other, but have an apparent disdain for each other. These are the makings of a modern day Civil War, which is on the verge of breaking our country in two. Let us not forget the famous words of Abraham Lincoln from his speech in 1858 that still holds true today, that "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Hopefully the U.S. Supreme Court will render a decision upholding the constitutional foundation upon which our nation was united.
